Alternative energy solutions: Biomass gasification plants convert wood chips and agricultural byproducts into synthetic fuel gas (Syngas), which can then be used for generating electricity, industrial heating and powering stationary engines. The amount of useful energy extracted per kilo of wood can be up to 5 times that obtained through inefficient production and consumption of wood-based charcoal. A feasibility study is underway to determine whether this technology could productively replace part of the deeply engrained charcoal industry in Haiti and generate electricity in a sustainable manner. Practical and affordable solutions to the challenges of Haiti do exist and positive things are happening on the ground every day. New ideas and new technology are arriving in a steady stream and blending with local knowledge and energy to produce literally hundreds of modern, locally appropriate and truly sustainable solutions – solving problems and seizing opportunities.
Sustainable Development Solutions (SDS) identifies, tests, promotes and supports the very best of these solutions – helping them grow from often small beginnings to self-sustaining success stories.
